This is an EU directive that seeks to limit the use of certain hazardous substances which are used in electrical and electronic equipment ('EEE'). This was done to help reduce the risk these substances place on people and also to the environment.
RoHS I was first implemented in 2003 under the EU Directive 2002/95/EC and took effect 1st July 2006. This directive restricted (with exceptions) the use of ten hazardous materials in the manufacture of some electrical and electronic equipment and components.
The RoHS 1 (2002/95/EC) hazardous compounds and their limits are shown in the table below:
